Activities available for whole family

The Agoura Hills/Calabasas Community Center offers a variety of classes for all ages, as well as summer camps. The center is at 27040 Malibu Hills Road, Calabasas.

+Israeli folk dancing is offered from 7 to 11 p.m. every Wednesday featuring circle, line and couple dances in a class facilitated by Israel Yakovee. At 7 p.m. a beginning lesson is offered; an intermediate lesson is at 8 p.m., followed by open dancing at 9 p.m. Cost is $10.

+The center offers an introduction to rock climbing class for adults. The class will cover harness usage, tying in, belaying, basic climbing techniques, signals, specific knots and climbing terminology. Cost is $60. Private instruction is also available.

Session I meets Tuesdays, May 23 to June 20 and Thursdays, May 11 and 18. Session II meets Tuesdays, June 13 and 20 and Thursdays, June 1 and 8.

Rock climbing for young children is offered on Fridays from 4 to 4:50 p.m. (ages 5 to 7) and from 5 to 5:50 p.m. (ages 8 to 10). The next four-week session begins May 12. The cost is $75.

+Have a cup of coffee and meet new friends while learning the basic rules, terminology and strategies of mah-jongg in a fiveweek class offered from 10 a.m. to noon on Mondays. The cost is $30. The upcoming session is from May 15 to June 19. There is no class on May 29.

Open mah-jongg is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Monday. Bring a personal mah-jongg set and play a pick-up game. Coffee is provided.

+The summer basketball league for ages 6 to 18 will begin Sun., June 11. Games will be played on Sundays. New players will be placed on teams with either current or former high school basketball coaches.

The registration fee for new players is $410 and includes uniform, bag, coaches, one practice per week and all games. The fee is $375 for returning players and does not include uniform or bag.

Registration dates are Wed., May 31 at 6:30 p.m. or Sat., June 3 at 4:30 p.m. Come to the Community Center on one of the above dates/times to meet the coaches and be evaluated for team placement.

Summer basketball camp is available for ages 8 to 18. This is the first year that the community center has offered an ARC summer camp in its indoor, airconditioned gymnasium.

This one-week camp will prepare players for the regular basketball season by enhancing strategic basketball skills along with sportsmanship, rules and coordination. The cost is $250 per week. Hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Session I is June 26 to 30. Session II is July 10 to 14, and Session III is July 17 to 21.

+Sports 'N' More Camp features a combination of sports, games and arts and crafts plus special attractions such as the rock wall, contests, events, live entertainment and special attractions.

Hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday for a $245 per week fee. The camp meets June 26 to 30, July 3 to 7 (no camp July 4), July 31 to Aug. 4, Aug. 7 to 11, and Aug. 14 to 18. Early registration is advised.

+In the Movies by Kids camp, children age 7 and up will learn different styles of movie-making, from live action to stop-motion animation. All movies will be professionally edited and a DVD will be provided to every student in class. The fee is $350.

There are three different weeklong camps. Camp is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Sessions are: "Lights, Camera, Action!" from June 19 to 23, "Adventures in Animation and Clay-mation" from July 10 to 14, and "Advanced Animation and Claymation" from Aug. 7 to 11.

+And for the first time, the center will offer a Rock & Roll High Camp for ages 6 to 11. Children will learn how to play a variety of instruments, write songs, perform with others and play live in front of an audience.

Space is limited, so register at least two weeks prior to the beginning of camp.

The cost is $350 per one-week session and hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Session I is June 26 to 30 and Session II is July 24 to 28.
