Basketball fundraiser

A "Hoop-A-Thon FunRaiser," intended to raise funds to help break the cycle of illegal child labor in India's carpet industry, will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sun., April 30 in the gym at Oak Park High School, 899 N. Kanan Road, Oak Park.

According to event organizers, about 150,000 children are forced to work in the Indian carpet industry, the vast majority in the Uttar Pradesh region.

By offering educational opportunities, vocational training, and a network of support to former "carpet slaves," the organization Rugmark is "restoring childhood to a generation of young Indian boys and girls and providing their best chance at a bright future."
