Give the AYBA a break

In the article "Athlete's Exceptional Skills Create a Flap," my dad, Howard Lauterbach, came under criticism for the choice the board of directors of the Agoura Youth Basketball Association made to limit the playing time of a 10-yearold girl. The article did not include the whole truth of what happened.

This girl started playing in AYBA halfway through the season without any of the board members' knowledge. She did not pay or sign any paperwork or insurance waivers, which legally caused a problem for the league. The board of directors had to step up and make a decision because no one else, including the division director, stepped up to their duties.

My dad wants to make AYBA fair and fun for everyone. After all, this is only a recreation league. I can't even tell you the countless hours that the members of the board volunteer to keep this league going.

If there is someone that has a problem with the way it is run, don't go complain to the newspaper. Get on the board and do something about it. Otherwise, don't say anything.

In response to the comment that the "anonymous" father made about the motive of the people on the board "is to get their kids on the all-star teams." I am in college and the last time I played in AYBA was when I was in eighth grade and my 16-year-old brother has not played in the league for one year. Also, there have not been all-star games for the past year.

It may be hard for some people to believe that there are people out there who selflessly volunteer their time and energy. Being president of the league is an extremely demanding position that gets absolutely no recognition. So if you do not like the way things are being run, join the board. There are open positions available for you. Rachel Lauterbach Oak Park
