Reconsider STAR camp closure

I was rather disappointed to hear about STAR (Success Through Awareness and Resistance) camp being canceled for the summer of 2006. Both our daughters, ages 11 and 9 have thoroughly enjoyed attending the camp for the last two years and were looking forward to the experience this summer.

I can only imagine that this action is being taken for some combination of operational, budgetary and bureaucratic reason. If the reason is economic, please recall that the camp used to cost $250 per week per child in 2004, which was reduced to $200 per week per child for 2005. Our family felt it was a good deal at the former price and would be willing to pay at least that this summer.

The people in charge need to know how good this camp is for the community. It has been a great way for the young kids to be introduced in a fun-loving way to the various important activities that law enforcement and other social services departments contribute toward the safety, security and welfare of our wonderful community.

Our kids always came back with stories from STAR camp regarding cool things they learned about how our community works.

In addition, the experience contributed to the kids developing a healthy respect and even a sense of gratitude towards the great people in uniform who serve our community with pride and devotion.

It's a shame that positive programs like STAR are being cut in a day and age when our children are in need of positive outdoor experiences.

I hope the authorities in charge reconsider this decision. Fariba and Rajan Samtani Agoura Hills
