Intersection blues The Carell Avenue and Thousand Oaks Boulevard intersection issue discussed ("Mr. Traffic Man," March 6) is the direct result of a process started by Carell Avenue residents several years ago. We became very concerned about speeding on Carell Avenue, particularly during morning commute, and most particularly about speeding high school students. We specifically requested that speed bumps be installed on Carell Avenue before and after the crest of the hill. Instead, the city's traffic engineer told us that this wasn't possible but the city would install a few "speed humps" because he didn't like speed bumps on hilly areas. He laid out the plan for the much-more expensive redesign of the intersection of Carell Avenue and Thousand Oaks Boulevard with the explanation that the constriction would encourage speeders to slow down. Well folks, lots of money was spent and it is even more unsafe today for Carell Avenue residents to enter Carell Avenue from their driveways due to increased speed, both up and down Carell Avenue, a strictly residential street. The U-turn issue at the bottom of the hill is actually the lesser problem but one nonetheless created by the city's traffic engineer. Carell Avenue needs speed reduction. Some ideas: a stop sign at both the downhill and uphill sides of Carell Avenue at the intersection with Michelle is one idea. Speed limit signs and finally, the speed bumps originally requested.
