Calabasas sign raises concerns A sign is posted at the entrance of the Calabasas Library and also at the entrance of the adjacent building which reads: Smoking is not permitted in this building. Warning: This building contains chemicals known to The State of California to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm. Calif. Health & Safety Code Sec. 25249.6. Both buildings are owned and managed by Kilroy Realty Corp. My curiosity was aroused. I called the Kilroy office and asked the question, "What does the warning sign mean and where are the cancer-causing chemicals in the building?" The reply was, "It's a catch-all to cover everything. We are required to post the sign." And a smoker can't light up outside in a park or dog run with no people around? What about the chemicals used on lawns, the grass and brush fires, the smog and bus/ car emissions polluting the air? I can understand the smoking ban in public buildings, but if you are outdoors and not near anyone, you are a criminal if you smoke a cigarette. You can drink as much alcohol as you want, anywhere and go out and drive a car-it's okay- unless of course you have an accident and kill someone. I am a nonsmoker and I don't like smoke in my face and I am not against smoking bans, but this is really far out. I don't like people sneezing or coughing around me, so that should be banned, too. And I don't like sick people going to the mall and spreading their germs. It's been my observation that smokers were complying with the rules, bans and restricts that were already in place and I believe this new law goes overboard and infringes on people's civil rights. Of course you can still buy cigarettes in Calabasas. Lori Young Calabasas |
