Parent/toddler programs offer many benefits

By Diane Wildhaber Special to The Acorn

Good things can be derived from a quality parent/toddler program, one that offers a strong educational component for both parent and child.

Such a program will give toddlers the opportunity to enjoy creative activities while learning to interact with other children. When introduced to "group play" with their peers at a young age, children improve in social skills and language development. The program includes time to share guided activities. This experience is not only fun, but provides significant learning opportunities for parent and child.

Toddlers have an easier time transitioning into preschool when they have had the opportunity to attend a good parent/ toddler program. Research shows that parental involvement is one of the most important factors in a child's educational success.

Parents who are active in their child's education are demonstrating that education is an important family value.

There is a strong educational component for parents in a quality program. Learning takes place through hand-outs, group discussions and informally while parents interact with children in guided activities. Parents benefit in three major ways:

+Improved parenting skills

+A deeper understanding of their child's developmental stages and the special needs of each stage. This can also enhance closeness between parent and child.

+ A sense of community is developed through facilitated interaction with other parents in the program. This helps build an extended support system for parents.

A program of this type is fun and educational and offers many rewards for parents and children.
