Beekeeper takes the sting out learning

Don Mitchell, a registered Los Angeles County beekeeper, will give a presentation on "Beekeepers and Bees" from 10:45 to 11:45 a.m. Sat., March 11 at Soka University, 26800 W. Mulholland Hwy., Calabasas. The event will occur rain or shine.

Among the topics Mitchell will cover are how to determine whether to request a bee capture or a bee elimination effort and why this is important; how to distinguish the differences between wild [feral] bees and managed bees; a dissertation on the honeyharvesting process; and more.

Amateur field ornithologist James Abernathy, who has been president of the Southwest Bird Study Club for eight years, will lead a "Bird Walk" from 8 a.m. to noon Mon., March 13 on the Soka campus; rain will cancel.

Attendees should bring their own binoculars.
