Heschel West, a Jewish Day School, offers a unique curriculum for its middle school.

“We have carefully considered the attributes by which we wish to set our middle school apart. We have decided on three key programmatic areas that will make our program unparalleled in the community and unrivaled by other Jewish days schools,” said Yuri Hronsky, middle school director.

The three areas are applied technology, community and political activism, and extreme experiences.

In the applied technology program, students receive hands-on experience in cuttingedge computer use, including video production, music composition, animation, and drafting. Students receive their own laptop and are taught to apply technology in all their studies. Students also are encouraged to evaluate government policies, introduce legislation at various levels of government, and experience activism at a community level and beyond.

For extreme experiences, students are encouraged to participate in activities ranging from mountain biking to outdoor survival skills. Among other virtues, the students learn team building, individual character building, and critical thinking skills when confronted with the challenges of this program.

Since its founding in 1994, Heschel West has shown “staggering growth.”

Currently, Heschel West educates 220 students in grades transitional kindergarten through sixth grade and will be opening a seventh grade in the fall.
