Facts check While the perennial deadline pressures on journalists are understandable, every writer and paper should strive to get it right and not just go through the motions, as evidenced in The Acorn’s cover feature on the Chinese New Year event at the Agoura Hills Library. It is tenable that concise headlines cannot capture the essence of stories and brief features cannot mention every party involved. However, the generic headline is somewhat misleading that this was a school event. First, a more complete rendering would include the facts that the Conejo Chinese Cultural Association and the Agoura Hills Library sponsored this event that attracted over 200 children and adults. Second, Jeff Su led the parade wearing a traditional lion’s head, not a dragon’s head. Finally, the Oak Park Tai Chi Club and its instructors, David Chang and Ning Lee, should have been mentioned in conjunction with the Tai Chi fan dance performance. I’m thankful to see this spirited community and library event receive press recognition; however, I hope for more comprehensive and accurate coverage by The Acorn in the future. Vanessa Hsu Teacher, Thousand Oaks Chinese School Editor’s note: While we regret the mistake about the lion’s head, the children in the pictures were, after all, students. The other items mentioned above could not be printed due to space limitations. |
