Defending Jim Bruno

After the city council’s rejection of the Lowe’s project, council member Jim Bruno wrote a positive letter to The Acorn. Subsequently, two letters were printed in which I believe Mr. Bruno was unfairly attacked and misprepresentations were again put forward about the Lowe's Town Center.

First of all, I was and still am an opponent of the project, but I was not “personally sought out” by Mr. Bruno. I actually came to my position on my very own, doing my very own research and thinking for myself, thank you.

Second, I feel the project was misrepresented and given an Orwellian name in that it was, after all, hardly in the center of town and was, as several letter writers pointed out, “tucked away” in a “relatively remote” part of the city.

Third, if the Lowe's was so widely favored and so important to these supporters, why didn't they make their voices heard at the town hall meetings and the city council hearings, where the voices who stood up and spoke were overwhelmingly in opposition?

Finally, Mayor McSweeny, after giving the project serious thought, listening carefully and patiently to those who sought to speak with her on the project and studying documents, came to a difficult conclusion that the project was not right for our city. A conclusion which also happened to be the same as that of Jim Bruno.

So, why the attacks? If the facts aren’t on your side, attack the messenger? Barbara Erickson Westlake Village
