YMCA gets Rotary makeover

More than 200 volunteers from seven Conejo Valley Rotary Clubs will perform an “extreme makeover” at the Conejo Valley YMCA on Sat., Feb. 25. The day’s activities are part of Rotary’s “International Day of Service” in which Rotarians commit an entire day to a handson renovation project.   Rotarians will take on six different projects at the Y, primarily focusing on the pool facility.

“The pool complex is about 15 years old and needs sprucing up,” said Steve Willmont, executive director of the Conejo Valley YMCA. “After the Rotaries approached us with the makeover idea several months ago, we’ve been planning the work schedule so when the day arrives, everyone will know what to do and get right to work.”   Rotary Club members will recoat the pool’s greenhouse enclosure and provide interior cleaning and painting, repair and replace the sliding glass and screen doors adjacent the pool, landscape around the building, repair and reapply safety strips to stairs leading up to the pool facility, repair and restrip the parking lot, and recarpet and paint the administrative offices.   “All seven Conejo Valley Rotaries decided we could make much more of an impact if we worked together on a single project,” said Andy Dominguez, member of the Rotary Club of Newbury Park and the project coordinator. “We felt the YMCA’s dedication to the community is much in line with Rotarian principles, so we decided to offer the Y our help.”   Participating Rotaries are: Conejo Valley, Conejo Valley Centennial, Thousand Oaks, Newbury Park, Westlake Sunrise, Westlake Village and Agoura Hills-Oak Park.

While the Rotaries are providing the workforce, much of the supplies and equipment for the project are still needed. Items include paint and painting supplies, screening and sliding glass door hardware, plants and ground-cover, carpet and parking lot slurry seal.
