Conejo Chabad showcasing Jewish art, movie

Chabad of the Conejo will host an art exhibit showcasing the work of Jewish artist Michoel Muchnik at 7 p.m. Sun., Feb. 12 at 30345 Canwood St., Agoura Hills. Admission is free. Light refreshments will be served.

Many of his works will be available for purchase. The artist will also be accepting new commissions.

Muchnik is credited with revolutionizing Chassidic art through “imaginative and joyful” depiction of traditional and mystical Jewish themes. His work has been widely exhibited.

Recently, Muchnik created “The Treasured Land,” a sculptural mural depicting the land of Israel for the Jewish Children’s Museum in New York.

He has also written and illustrated a number of children’s books and provided cover illustrations for other books and magazines, including Hadassah.

At 6 and 8 p.m. Mon., Feb. 13, the Conejo Jewish Academy will host two screenings of “Ushpizin” at Westlake Village Cinema, 4711 Lakeview Canyon Road, Westlake Village. Admission is $10.

It is the first film made by members of the ultra-Orthodox community in collaboration with secular filmmakers and aimed at general audiences (appropriate for children and teens).

The film introduces Western viewers to organizations, rituals and customs, while also depicting members of the ultra-Orthodox community in modern-day Israel in scenes of ordinary living, drinking, smoking, dancing, arguing, reconciling, listening to popular music and grappling with their faith.

Writer-star Shuli Rand won the 2004 Best Actor award at the 2004 Israeli Film Academy for his performance.
