Sign too flashy Although I do not condone theft, the fact that someone removed that obnoxious flashing stop sign at the northbound approach to the Park Entrada intersection in Calabasas is worth a reward. It was like a disco sign with flashing red lights that insults the intelligence of every driver who had to look at it. We have all been well conditioned to stop at the familiar eight-sided red stop sign, so why add all that glitz and flash? Are we all to stupid to understand what stop means? This is a blight it is to our community and light pollution at its worse. For a beautiful park-like community up Parkway Calabasas Road—with no stores, billboards, or visual distractions— the city has decided to install these thick steel poles with a large transformer box attached and an awning of light receptors, in addition to the way-oversized red stop sign and its added blitz of flashing red lights. And, just up the street is another brilliant idea gone bad: orange flags to be carried when crossing the street to be better seen by cars. I travel through that wonderful roundabout intersection at least six times a day and I have never seen a single person carrying that flag. They just sit in their containers getting more and more faded and looking dumb. Why can't we just leave things that work, alone? Linda Katz Calabasas |
