Charity begins at home The Spirit of Calabasas has demonstrated unprecedented support and compassion for communities in need, such as their recent trip to help Plaquemines Parish in New Orleans. While a heartfelt reaching outside our community can never be less than noble, what can the Spirit of Calabasas do for citizens in need right here within Calabasas? What can the Spirit of Calabasas do for the renters of the community, some of which are senior citizens, disabled citizens, who are being priced out of the community due to excessive increases in a dysfunctional market that has even raised the rents on the affordable housing program renters that is beyond their the fixed incomes? As you know, The Acorn has documented cases of homelessness due to excessive rent increases in the Conejo Valley community. What can the Spirit of Calabasas do to prevent hardship on senior citizens, the disabled— right here in Calabasas—whose rents are exceeding their fixed incomes without fostering a greater city of Calabasas participation in subsidies, which not only burdens and drains valuable city resources, but simply hands over city funds to unrestrained property owners who are controlling and manipulating the market to their advantage, even causing “affordable housing” increases to exceed the scope of their intent? It is admirable what you have done outside our community; can you do the same here in Calabasas for the senior citizens and disabled apartment renters? Anthony Pecoraro Calabasas |
