‘Merry Christmasnot mandatory

This is in reference to the letter from Mr. Felsman regarding the difficulty of getting sales clerks to say “Merry Christmas” at this time of year.

I inferred that he feels that saying “happy holidays” takes away from the meaning of the holiday. I beg to differ with that, however. I'm a Catholic and, yes, I celebrate Christmas the traditional way. But I prefer to say “happy holidays” to people I don't know because I think, as a Christian, I should treat them the way I want to be treated. I don't want to impose my beliefs on them. Would I want them doing that to me?

Saying “happy holidays” implies that I want them to enjoy the season however they want to celebrate. Isn't that what Christmas and Christ are really about? Regina Saucedo Westlake Village
