What happened to Oak Park mail box?

I live a corner on Conifer Street in Oak Park one block from the corner of Kanan and Conifer. There used to be a mailbox on the corner Kanan and Conifer Suddenly it is gone. No notice, no warning, no message from the post office as to where it was moved to, if indeed it was moved somewhere rather than just being removed.

A few weeks ago a crossing guard wrote a letter complaining that this mail box was a traffic hazard because drivers would pull over, stop and mail letters. But in the 21 years that we have lived here, I am not aware of a single accident being caused by drivers stopping at this mailbox.

People are cautions; if they see a car pulled over at the curb, they don’t go out of their way to hit it. Drivers exiting their car on the street side usually wait until it is clear to open their door. They are not stopping in a crosswalk so they are not endangering any pedestrians.

Kanan is a wide enough street to allow for a car to pull over for 30 seconds or one minute it takes to jump out and mail a letter. It was so nice to be able to walk down and mail a

letter if we missed the daily pickup, or if for some reason it was a piece of mail we didn’t want to leave in our curbside mail box, or if it was on a Sunday. Now I have to get in my car, which uses unnecessary gas, and is more likely to cause an accident as it is another car on the road, and go and find a mail box.

I am not aware of any other mail boxes within walking distance of my home.

Postal Service, we want our mailbox back. At the very least, we want one nearby where the old one was—and if it was moved somewhere nearby, please tell us where you put it! Cynthia Horacek Oak Park
