War between the factions continues

I found Stuart Selter’s letter in last week’s Acorn regarding the city of Agoura Hills and school funding quite remarkable.

It’s nice that Stuart finally wrote a letter to the Acorn. It’s too bad he didn’t have the courage to write one during the election to support a council candidate who supported more funding of the schools by the city of Agoura Hills, as Calabasas has done. He fails to even criticize the city on their lack of school funding. The city wouldn’t even allow a $100,000 budget item in reserve for the Education Foundation at the council meeting Selter attended. He never said one word to the council about that.

He also forgets that he attended Chamber of Commerce board meetings and was provided the list of every Chamber member to solicit donations for the Education Foundation. My company and several others in Agoura Hills have donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to the schools over the past 20 years.

I also read in last week’s Acorn that the new mayor of Agoura Hills stated in his remarks on taking office last week that there should be “quiet” dialogue with the business community. Sadly, this has been true the past 20 years in Agoura Hills. City staff has told the Chamber many times over the years that they had to have “permission” from the council to meet with the Chamber. Most cities have monthly business roundtables and not a ceremonial yearly one to give the impression that Agoura Hills is business-friendly. Bernie Wickman Reeds Furniture Editor’s note: The Agoura Hills City Council said it needs a formal proposal from the Education Foundation before donating funds. No such proposal has been received.
