Editorial wrong?

You are correct in concluding (Dec.1 Acorn editorial) that the construction of affordable homes has nothing to do with market forces but more with “social considerations.”

The Ahmanson Ranch project is a perfect example. Over 20 percent of the housing units in the project were to be “affordable housing” units. As a Mountain View Estates homeowners, I attended a homeowners’ association meeting in 1991 when it was first discussed to fight the project. There was no mention of open space. There was no mention of the endangered spiny cactus. The only arguments against the project were based on the impact to our property values with all those smaller homes being built adjacent to our enclave.

The dirty little secret is the NIMBYs (Not In My Back Yard) don’t want affordable housing and will blame the environmental impact, traffic on the 101 Freeway, the need for open space and any other reason other than the real reason. Norman Shubert Westlake Village
