Measure C was a grass roots effort

I would like to take exception to the statement in the Nov. 17 editorial saying that Measure C was not defeated by a grassroots movement. A grassroots movement comprised of the citizens of Calabasas is exactly what defeated Measure C.

Yes, we did receive support from Zev Yaroslavsky and Shelia Kuehl which translated into flyers and a couple of mailings that slightly leveled the playing field. The developer sent out many more mailings and spent far more money than we did. What tipped the balance were the outraged residents of Calabasas, like myself, who donated countless hours walking from door to door and making phone calls.

What were we outraged about? The developer put out signs that said, “Stop School Overcrowding: Yes on C” and “Reduce Traffic: Yes on C,” etc.

They attempted to paint Measure C as an open space initiative with no reference to the gigantic hotel development at all. Because of the impact that this development would have had on Malibu Creek State Park, voting against this project did protect open space.

When the residents of Calabasas learned the truth about Measure C, they chose to vote against it. Jim Garafalo Calabasas
