Agoura Village report comes under review The city of Agoura Hills has just prepared the Draft Environmental Impact Report (DEIR) for the Agoura Village Specific Plan. This DEIR is available to the public for review at the Agoura Hills Library on 29901 Ladyface Court. The project is on a 135-acre site along Kanan Road and Agoura Road. The plan would allow up to 5,745-square-feet of building area. Included in this figure are 235 to 293 residential units, a high density plan. I understand that the city required additional sources of tax revenue, buy why the residential units? The commercial aspects of this project will result in increased traffic on Kanan Road, but the residential units will compound the increased traffic problem on Kanan Road as well as on the Kanan bridge. The city claims that the traffic and air quality issues were found to be significant, but not mitigable. This is simply nonsense. Nothing is not mitigable; problems always have solutions. The solutions may not be cost effective and if not, then it logically follows that the proposed plans and projects are not viable. Currently, there is another major housing development located adjacent to the south side of the Agoura Village. It is currently in review by the Los Angles County Regional Planning Commission, but the developer is waiting to see what Agoura Village will do about the number of residential units. If the DEIR for the Village is approved, this developer will claim discrimination in that the Village will have high density housing, but he will not be granted the same privilege. In fact, this developer has stated in front of the L.A. County Regional Planning Commission that these developments will be the gateway to further developments on Kanan Road into the Santa Monica Mountains. The public hearing on the Village DEIR is set for Dec. 1, 6:30 p.m. at the City Council Chambers. All written comments concerning the DEIR must be submitted by Jan. 2. Too much development along Kanan Road is not a good thing for the community and the Kanan bridge. Cheater T. Yabitsu Agoura |
