Calabasas has ‘circle of horror’

Commonly known to Calabasas as “the roundabout,” the circle of horror that suddenly appears in the middle of Parkway Calabasas at Camino Portal may remain the area’s single most ridiculous traffic hazard. Now that proper controls and long-warranted safety measures have been installed near Bay Laurel Elementary, the traffic circle south of that new signal has become increasingly more dangerous.

Apparently pitifully few drivers have any clue as to the laws concerning the proper use of that traffic configuration. Most of its users have no concept of the common courtesies needed to safely navigate that circle.

The northbound traffic is in a hurry to get to and past the new bother, the traffic light at Paseo Primario. Meanwhile, the southbound traffic is in a hurry to get away from the annoying traffic signal that impeded their rush home.

Many of the motorists are too busy with their divided attention to consider the safety of others and many of them suffer from the dreaded entitlement disease, which adversely affects their driving skills and sense of decency or respect.

Simple observation or study of behavior will patently reveal just how dangerous and potentially deadly the roundabout actually is. It will be found that at least a fourway stop sign, if not a complete traffic signal, is warranted.

I respectfully call upon the Calabasas City Council, the city’s traffic department, CPHA and all concerned parents and citizens to immediately take action to prevent the kinds of traffic horrors that, only by the grace of God, have been narrowly averted there on a daily basis. Steve Lotto Calabasas
