Measure D will protect open space The desire to exercise local control over land use issues was one of the primary motivating factors for the incorporation of Calabasas in 1991 and it ranks high among the many reasons why we chose to live here today. On election day, voters will have an historic opportunity to demonstrate their continued commitment to the values which define our community by voting yes on Measure D, the Calabasas Open Space Initiative. Measure D will help preserve existing areas of open space in our city by operating prospectively to require two-thirds voter approval before any land designated as open space in the General Plan can be redesignated for other uses. Under current law, it only takes a simple majority of the city council to re-zone open space to permit urban development. The Open Space Initiative will invest in the people the power to make important decisions regarding future growth. The Open Space Initiative has been endorsed by all 11 past and present Calabasas City Council members and by the city’s largest homeowners associations, including the Calabasas Park HOA, Greater Mulwood HOA, Malibu Canyon Community Association, Community Association of Saratoga Hills and Las Virgenes Homeowners Federation. Measure D has no formal opposition. As its author, I urge you to join me in voting yes on Measure D. James R. Bozajian Calabasas City Council |
