Best Friends Society helps abused animals

Best Friends Animal Society operates the nation’s largest sanctuary for abandoned and abused animals, and is working with shelters and rescue groups nationwide “to bring about a time when there will be no more homeless pets.” They were instrumental in animal rescue efforts following Hurricane Katrina.

They will host a weekend of special events on Sat. and Sun., Nov. 12 and 13. The i n a u g u r a l “Strut Your Mutt” dog walk is from 8 to 11 a.m. Sunday, a one to two-mile walk t h r o u g h Woodley Park, 6350 Woodley Ave., Van Nuys (between Burbank and Victory Boulevards).

The event is part of Best Friends Animal Society’s Los Angeles Programs’ local division and all funds raised will go toward saving homeless animals in the Los Angeles community.

“Strut Your Mutt” is part of the two-day Best Friends Fall Super Adoption Festival which will offer more than 1,000 homeless dogs, cats, kittens, puppies, parrots and rabbits for adoption from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Lara Scott, radio disc jockey for STAR 98.7FM will emcee, awarding prizes to the top three fundraisers at the event.

The first place fundraiser will receive a one-week stay on Maui. Funds raised will go to

wards pet adoption festivals, s p a y / n e u t e r c a m p a i g n s , shelter rescue and adoption as well as community education. Scott will also co-host the Fall Super A d o p t i o n ’s “shelter dog parade.”

The festival is planned to save animal lives in a fun,

festival-like at

mosphere. Admission is free and will include: the shelter dog parade; all-day dog agility, Frisbees and fly ball exhibitions; a variety of children’s activities; silent auction and raffle booths; pet psychics; celebrity guests; veterinarians and dog trainers; petrelated products and services; s food and refreshments; and more.
