Scrabble needs a home In July, my wife and I decided that we were going to adopt a dog from a local shelter. We happened to end up at the Westlake Village Petsmart, where an Agoura-based organization called LIFE (Life Is For Everyone) had numerous dogs and cats for adoption. We found a perfect puppy, Scrabble, a rat terrier/chihuahua mix. We spent about two hours playing with the dog, filled out the application, and the volunteers told us that our application looked great. They told us that she needed a couple more shots from the vet, and that they would contact us later in the week. Later that day, we happened to be at the Costco in Westlake, and decided to stop by Petsmart again and see Scrabble. She is the most adorable little dog, and at that point, the volunteers told us that they think she is deaf, and therefore should be placed in a home with other dogs so they can show her around. My heart was broken, but I understood that the dog should be placed in the best possible situation. Later that week, my wife and I adopted a Jack Russell/Chihuahua mix from a shelter, and named her Curry. About a week later, we received a call from a LIFE volunteer letting us know that if we wanted Scrabble, she was still available, and although totally deaf, did not need to be placed with other dogs. I understand that it is hard to organize a volunteer animal rescue organization, and I have decided that it is twice as easy to buy a dog from a breeder as it is to adopt, but my main concern is that Scrabble still doesn’t have a proper home. I saw her at the Petsmart last Saturday, and she is as cute as ever. Although I feel that LIFE is very poorly managed, I would ask that all pet lovers consider adopting Scrabble. She is a wonderful puppy, and I hope a reader of The Acorn has a wonderful home for her. Erik Haberstroh Westlake Village |
