Ditto on SUVs

A tip of the hat to Michael Reardon for his letter addressing the dangerous situation in the Oak Park area regarding the moms who are driving their kids to school in their Escalades or Navigators, completely engrossed in their cellphone conversations.

Michael steps up and is unafraid to address something many may find politically incorrect. The day before I saw your letter, my wife and I had a conversation about the very same issue.

Separately, both of us had experienced dangerous driving by soccer moms in their oversized SUVs on their cellphones on four separate occasions in one day. It is an epidemic that is becoming more serious with the discourtesy, dangerous driving and poor parental examples for children. We see similar examples all over town, in restaurants, shopping and elsewhere. No regard for others and children being ignored.

What can be done? One thing would be to pass a law requiring all drivers to use either headsets or speakerphones. Unfortunately, we can’t pass laws to protect us from folks who drive automobiles far greater in size than their skill level and display mindless discourtesy and bad behavior.
