Ovarian cancer to be discussed

Local women fighting ovarian cancer and their families can explore ways to educate and empower themselves at a free workshop hosted by The Wellness Community Valley/Ventura from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Thurs., Oct. 27 at The Wellness Community Valley/ Ventura, 530 Hampshire Road, Westlake Village.

Gynecologic oncologist Dr. W. Michael Hogan will discuss ways to improve the quality of life during and after treatment for ovarian cancer, as well as ways to proactively sequence chemotherapy treatments to provide optimal results and improve quality of life at the same time.

“Cancer often causes people to feel they are powerless,” said Marty Nason, RN, MN, program director of The Wellness Community Valley/Ventura. “It is so important for women to hear that they can take control and have a high quality of life during and after receiving treatment for this disease. This knowledge is truly empowering.”

Hogan is a leader in gynecologic cancers, practicing in Thousand Oaks, Ventura and Santa Barbara. He earned an undergraduate degree in chemistry from Franklin and Marshall College and graduated with honors from Baylor College of Medicine.

Hogan was chief of gynecologic oncology at two medical centers in Philadelphia and served numerous academic appointments at schools of medicine. He is active in clinical research and has authored more than 70 original publications in the area of gynecologic oncology.
