Temple Aliyah will observe Sukkot services Temple Aliyah will celebrate Sukkot services from Oct. 18 through Oct. 26 at the synagogue at 6025 Valley Circle Drive, Woodland Hills. Services will be led by Rabbi Stewart L. Vogel, Hazzan Mike Stein and Cantor Mindy Harris. The services are as follows: Tues., Oct. 18, 9:15 a.m., first day of Sukkot in the sanctuary. Wed., Oct. 19, 9:15 a.m., second day of Sukkot in the Kurland Family Chapel. Fri., Oct. 21, 8:15 p.m., Shabat Hol Hamoed and Every Third Shabbat in the sanctuary. Mon., Oct. 24, 8 a.m., Hoshannah Rabah in the Kurland Family Chapel. Tues., Oct. 25, 6 p.m. ECE, Erev Simchat Torah, followed by family service at 7:30 p.m. Wed., Oct. 26, 9:15 a.m., Simchat Torah in the sanctuary. Sukkot, the festival of the booths, is a holiday of joy and thanksgiving as Jews rejoice in the abundance of the harvest and the exodus from Egypt. During these days, Jews pray for salvation (Hoshana Rabah) and celebrate the solemn gathering (Shemini Atzeret). Simchat Torah, joy in the Torah, is the last day of Sukkot and is celebrated by rejoicing in the completion of the yearly cycle of Torah reading in Deuteronomy and the beginning of a new cycle in Genesis.
