The great ‘soccer mom’ debate I should like to reply to the letter by Michael Reardon in the Sept. 29 Acorn, “Soccer moms, get a clue.” Mr. Reardon—you hit the nail on the head. I do have a cellphone and use it very cautiously, that is, only when needed. I don’t have to call a friend to ask “how do you like the warm weather?” Very few people have my number—my son Arthur in Aurora, Colo. and my cousins in Buffalo, N.Y. and Wooster, Ohio. When my cellphone rings and I am driving, I pull over to the side of the road and even the soft shoulder on the freeway to answer. It works. I am also aware of the U-turns taking place near the school(s) when it clearly states “no U-turn.” And when the light turns amber that is supposed to mean “red next,” so stop. A stop sign doesn’t spell “slow down,” it spells stop. Bob used to tell me, “Eileen, when you come to a stop sign, you do everything but turn off the key.” About 15 years ago, I got a ticket on Mulholland Drive in Calabasas for speeding. To this day, if the speed limit is 35, as off the 101 on Kanan Road, I go 34 miles; if it is 45 miles, I go 44 and on the 65 Freeway, I go 64. Cars are passing me going what seems like 80 mph, but who cares—I follow the law. Parents, protect our children and everyone. Please drive carefully with your attention 100 percent on the road.
