SUV drivers are insensitive In reference to Michael Reardon’s letter, “Soccer moms, get a clue,” it does seem that the poorest examples of safe driving are those driving SUVs. It does seem that most of the drivers do happen to be females. It does seem that most of those drivers are “moms,” whose children are in some afternoon sport activity (most likely soccer this time of the year). It does seem that most of those drivers are using cell phones. But, unfortunately, poor driving examples happen everywhere, not just at school drop-off. Unfortunately, bad driving examples do seem to involve SUVs. Especially when it comes to parking within the lines of a parking space (my pet peeve). But in fairness to my gender, the fathers of the family do also share some responsibility, because most likely it is “their” paycheck that has enabled the family to afford the purchase of the SUV. Fathers and mothers mistakenly think that the SUV is a safer vehicle, but not so. We have the evidence that SUVs are not safer, especially here in the Conejo Valley where several young lives have been lost because of inappropriate driving of SUVs. Simply put, drivers and those who purchase SUVs need to realize that SUVs are not necessarily passenger cars and need to be driven with a different mindset. In short, we all need to be more cautious and courteous of each other. Eva Larson Oak Park |
