Soccer moms, get a clue What is it about Oak Park that makes people drive so dangerously and act so selfish? As a resident and a dad with the luxury of dropping my child off to school each morning, I have witnessed the most horrendous driving acts that border on murderous each and every day. Going to Oak Hills School each morning for three years gave me a solid introduction to the various breed of morons in this “loving community.” First there is the “soccer mom,” cell phone in one hand, the other hand waving to friends and neighbors while her SUV careens around the lanes like a pinball on espresso. The kids in the back seat bounce around obliviously watching the latest cartoon on the DVD because that twominute drive is just too much for actual conversation. Then, while walking to school to get some minimal exercise and enjoy the weather, I discovered that red lights and pedestrians are not worth the two seconds saved by screeching past both. Hurried drivers honk viciously at anyone who dares get in their path. These drivers claim to be caring parents, but force-feed their children with a “do as I say, not as I do” brand of reckless driving that can easily cost someone their life. The moms regularly make Uturns in the middle of Church Street while kids are crossing the walks, have turned Kanan Road into a four lane personal speedway, honk at people who have the audacity to stop at a red light, and have completely forgotten basic common courtesy by usually scowling at the kids going to school. Moms, rather than talk on the cell phone, honk illegally like a maniac, or dress like your teenager to impress your friends, try paying more attention to your child and lead by example, not by words.
