City denied park and equestrian grants

The city of Agoura Hills was recently denied two government Land and Water Conservation grants, one to expand the equestrian trails in Old Agoura and the other to improve Morrison Park.

Ken Berkman, city engineer, said that the equestrian grant would have paid half the cost of construction of equestrian trails. The grant totaled $250,000, but the city was required to match the funds. Berkman said new horse trails would have been built in Old Agoura including the Driver/ Foothill/Fairview loop.

It was estimated that one to two miles of equestrian trails would have been constructed with the matching grant.

The city also was denied a matching $300,000 grant to complete the Morrison Park Improvement Project, Berkman said. The $600,000 project would include tennis courts, basketball courts, restrooms and a storage area.

Berkman said he didn’t know why the grants were denied, but that more funds would be sought in the future.
