Let city, not the voters decide Lowe’s

Let the Westlake Village City Council decide the Lowe’s proposal.

We elect the city council members for a reason—to evaluate facts and make the best decisions possible on numerous matters affecting WLV. Let’s let the process run its course before resorting to the expense and inevitable confusion of a general election. Nothing has happened to lead us to believe that the council is unable to complete its evaluation of the Lowe’s proposal. The council members represent the WLV residents and should be given the opportunity to do their job.

The call for a general vote is so premature that I have to believe the “vote proponents” have ulterior motives. I think they believe they will lose in the council and want to do whatever they can to throw the decision-making process into disarray. This will have the effect of costing the city and the proponents additional money, and makes the proposal less viable.

Simply because there are opponents to an issue doesn’t mean the entire population needs to vote. Why should a small percentage of the population force the rest of us into a costly proceeding that hasn’t been proven necessary?

Lastly, I do agree with Ron Klamert on the need for more open spaces, parks, etc. However, that is not the issue at hand. The property owner will build either the Lowe’s complex or a large office complex—not a park. I do believe that the council seriously misdirects resources and provides fodder for people like Ron (and me) when, for example, it authorizes expensive new street signs (that don’t need replacing), but allows basketball hoops to rust in the local parks.
