Sign up to be environmental interpreter

Individuals who enjoy nature are invited to join the Topanga Canyon Docents, a group of environmental interpreters who lead school tours and easy-paced hikes.

The group will begin its 31st annual fall training session for volunteers at 9:30 a.m. Sat., Sept. 17. The six-hour classes, offered on alternate Saturdays, will conclude on Dec. 3.

In addition to leading midweek tours for schools and other organizations in Topanga State Park, the docents offer public walks on Sundays from January through September and host visitors at the nature center on select Sundays.

The docents also lead monthly walks at Rocky Oaks and Peter Strauss Ranch, units of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area.

Both parks are located off Kanan Road south of Agoura Hills. Rocky Oaks is at the junction of Kanan Road and Mulholland Highway, reached by turning right at the corner. Strauss Ranch is at 30000 Mulholland Hwy., reached by turning left off Kanan at Troutdale Drive.

The training session will provide detailed information on the natural history of the Santa Monica Mountains. The cost of $50 includes membership in the Topanga Canyon Docents, all written materials and handouts and introductory walks to acquaint new members with the native flora and fauna.
