Plenty of things to do in Agoura Hills

The city of Agoura Hills Department of Community Services presents the following activities and classes this month.

The department is co-sponsoring a novice tennis tournament for boys and girls ages 8 to 15 from noon to 5 p.m. Sat., Aug. 20 at the Oxnard Tennis Center. The registration fee is $14 and the deadline to register is 5 p.m. Tues., Aug. 9 at the Agoura Hills Recreation Center, 30610 Thousand Oaks Blvd., Agoura Hills.

A “Navigate the Internet” computer course will be presented from 11 a.m. to noon on Thursdays, Aug. 11 to Sept. 1 at the Agoura Hills Library. The class is open to ages 18 and up. It will teach participants how to surf the Internet, use links, bookmarks and search engines, plus emailing. The course fee is $60.

Skyhawks Sports Academy will offer a volleyball camp for ages 7 to 14 from Aug. 15 to 19. Call the Recreation Center for additional details on this and other sports camps.

The Senior Recreation Program’s book club will meet from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tues., Aug. 16. Call the Recreation Center for location. The book club will be discussing “Miss Julia Speaks Her Mind” by Ann B. Ross. Participants must supply their own book. Participation in senior activities offered through the city of Agoura Hills requires a $12 annual fee.

Karate Camp for youth ages 6 through 16 will be offered from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tues., Aug. 16 through Thurs., Aug. 18 at the Recreation Center. The camp fee is $95. Participants will learn about martial arts with an emphasis on safety and awareness.

Openings remain in the nineweek fencing courses, from Wed., Aug. 17 to Oct. 12, taught by instructors from Swords Fencing Studio at the Recreation Center. Youth ages 6 to 14 will meet from 6:45 to 7:45 p.m., and ages 14 and older will be taught from 7:45 to 8:45 p.m. Each course costs $98, plus a $35 equipment rental fee.

The senior program will offer an “Oil Painting and Drawing Instruction” class from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mon., Aug. 22 through Oct. 17. The class, which covers all art mediums from pencil to oil colors, is for adults age 50 and above. The cost of the eight-week session is $35 for program members.
