More candidates file for Agoura Hills council

By Stephanie Bertholdo bertholdo@theacorn.com

A photography student, a NASCAR marketing specialist, an attorney, a human resources consultant, a small business owner and other local business executives have filed papers to run for the three seats on the Agoura Hills City Council this fall.

Mayor Ed Corridori and Councilmember Jeff Reinhardt earlier announced that they would not run for reelection.

With two seats open, seven Agoura Hills residents have thrown in their hats.

Denis Weber, another veteran council member, is the only incumbent seeking reelection. Weber has served on the city council for 12 years.

In addition to Weber and a pair of city planning commissioners who’ve announced their candidacy—Bill Koehler, an attorney, and Harry Schwarz, a human resource consultant—four more candidates jumped on the political bandwagon last week.

George Thomas, a small business owner who ran unsuccessfully for city council in 2003, is throwing his hat into the race once again.

“It is time for change in Agoura Hills,” Thomas said, concerned about the city’s recent pattern of development. “The current city council and planning commission have approved too many office buildings. They generate very little revenue for the city, which is already saturated with empty office space.”

Adam Guynes, 20, is a photography student who said he chose to run for city council because he believes it’s important for young people to get involved in local politics.

Todd August, a chief administrative officer for a university, and Michael Held, a motor sports (NASCAR) marketing specialist, also have announced their intention to run for the four-year terms.

Jay Lewitt, president of Every Promotional Product in Westlake Village, announced his intention to run, but later changed his mind.

Nomination papers for city council are available at the city clerk’s office. Candidates must be registered voters and residents of Agoura Hills.

There is no filing fee, but candidates must submit a minimum of 20, and no more than 30, signatures from registered voters in the city.

The filing period runs from July 18 to Aug. 12, but it is expected to be extended when the two incumbents do not file for reelection.
