Foundation hands out scholarships

The Ventura County Community Foundation (VCCF) awarded more than $600,000 in scholarships to 217 local students as part of its annual scholarship program. The dollar amount of scholarships awarded this year is double the amount from a year ago and represents an expansion of several key initiatives.

“We are thrilled to be able to help so many deserving students pursue their dreams of obtaining a college education,” said Mary Leavens Schwabauer, chair of the VCCF board and the scholarship advisory.

The foundation has over $12.8 million in endowed funds for scholarships and student-related programs.

Scholarships receipients from Oak Park and Westlake Village include:

Oak Park: Brian Kim, $1,200 William A. Fairburn, Jr. and Cynthia D. Fairburn Memorial Scholarship; Jiakun Liu, $1,200 William A. Fairburn, Jr. and Cynthia D. Fairburn Memorial Scholarship; Alexandra Martin, $1,200 William A. Fairburn, Jr. and Cynthia D. Fairburn Memorial Scholarship; Kevin A. Potter, $1,200 William A. Fairburn, Jr. and Cynthia D. Fairburn Memorial Scholarship and $500 Association of Water Agencies Scholarship; and Sabrina Chou, $1,200 William A. Fairburn, Jr. and Cynthia D. Fairburn Memorial Scholarship.

Westlake Village:

Ira Clary, Jr., $2,200 Roy A. Gustafson Memorial Scholarship; Daniel Agarwal, $1,000 Gary W. Chism Memorial Scholarship; Tyffany Chen, $1,500 Sage Scholarship; Shalra Hameed, $1,200 William A. Fairburn, Jr. and Cynthia D. Fairburn Memorial Scholarship; Jordan Michaels, William A. Fairburn, Jr. and Cynthia D. Fairburn Memorial Scholarship; Christopher Conant, $2,200 Roy A. Gustafson Memorial Scholarship; and Kristopher Cronin, $2,200 Roy A. Gustafson Memorial Scholarship.

The Ventura County Community Foundation is a family of charitable funds created in 1987 by citizens who cared about strengthening the community, preserving and expanding its cultural resources, and helping those in need.
