Community Center doesn’t play fair with volleyball rates We used to enjoy playing volleyball on Wednesday evenings at the Calabasas/Agoura Community Center. We would get 30 to 40 high school students and adults per week. The charge was a couple of dollars. Then about a year ago, the price went up to $7 per person and as basic economics played out, the 30 to 40 people per week went down to one or two persons per week. The reason given for the increase was to encourage people to sign up as members of the club, which did not happen. After a few months, the Wednesday nighvolleyball was closed down due to a “lack of interest” from the community. Last week I dropped by the community center and they indicated that they were going to starvolleyball up again. I was excited until they indicated they were keeping the same price structureI am not familiar with how the community center is funded or with its operating expenses, buit seems that 30 to 40 people paying $2 or $3 is better than one or two persons paying $7. I would think that a community center would be a place that the community could use. There is a loof volleyball interest with the youth in Calabasas, Agoura and Oak Park that would love a place to play, if affordable. Most of the players have now gone over to the Thousand Oaks Recreation Center (free) or the Newbury Park Recreation Center (free) but it is extremely busy and most of the time is spent waiting to play. This is a shame since the Calabasas/Agoura Center sits empty. Allen Adams Oak Park |
