The highs and Lowe’s of new big box development

As an avid Acorn reader, I felt compelled to respond to the editorial in the June 23 issue stating that allowing Lowe’s is the right thing to do.

First off, I find the timing of this editorial to be very interesting, considering the concept review was a month ago and environmental impact report and public hearing are still a few months away.

Second, the NIMBY (not-inmy-back-yard) argument just isn’t true since the land is going to be built on regardless. The council has made it clear that if they do not amend the general plan, the specific plan and the development agreement (which will be required) for the Lowe’s project, then there is a developer right behind them prepared to build a commercial office project in excess of 300,000 square feet.

As a common sense person, I do not understand how you can rush to support a project when its full impact on the local community is complete unknown. The environmental report, if completed properly, will explain to the council and citizens what impact the Lowe’s project will have on the community verses the impact of the intended office complex.

Third, the argument that we need a home improvement store to make our houses prettier is flat out ridiculous.

Lastly, the city council absolutely has a responsibility to its citizens who have elected them to make those decisions. And we will have that choice again in November when three Westlake Vilalge council seats will be up for election. Curt Knabe Westlake Village
