BEAR CARE— Volunteer at left shows off several “memorial bears” that remember the lives of loved ones who’ve been lost to terminal disease. Haven Buena Vista Hospice Care, Inc. in Westlake Village uses volunteers as an important part of the multi-disciplinary health team to enhance the patient’s and family’s quality of life. After completing an orientation course, volunteers are matched with a family based on the family’s need and the volunteer’s interests. Volunteers assist in many ways, including companionship visits, running errands and helping with household chores.

A new volunteer option is the making of “memorial bears.” As families grieve their loss, they may choose a favorite article of clothing or blanket that represents a positive remembrance of the loved one. The fabric is then made into a cloth-stuffed “memorial bear” by volunteers and returned to the family to keep. Recently, bears have been made from a patient’s favorite pillow case, a grandfather’s flannel shirt and a woman’s sweater set. Families receive a memory of their loved one in the form of a “memorial bear.”

Haven Buena Vista Hospice Care, Inc. has provided terminally ill patients and their families with medical care and emotional support for almost three years in west Ventura County and parts of Los Angeles County.

Volunteers who wish to help made “memorial bears” or to volunteer in any way can call (805) 777-1133.
