New resort a boost to the community The truly wonderful cities in California are those that have learned how to embrace the diverse needs of residential, commercial and open space. It seems the Calabasas city fathers (and mothers) recognized the need for diversity and worked diligently to keep the city’s open space from being swallowed up by residential or commercial enterprises. We now have a wonderful city with a strong fiscal base that allows our elected representatives to offer a range of valuable services. Our city council now is being given the opportunity to improve the city even more. The Malibu Valley Inn is a proposal that makes absolute sense for Calabasas. The land currently sits outside the city’s boundaries and the developer has the right to construct 81 homes on the site. Instead, the developer has requested that Calabasas annex his property into the city. He is also proposing to scrap his plans for new homes in favor of a beautiful complex that will include an inn, a restaurant, an equestrian center, a spa and a large tract of open space. From the city’s perspective, this development will only enhance the reputation of Calabasas while generating additional income to fund even more community programs. In summary, by supporting the Malibu Valley Inn, Calabasas would improve its image, receive a significant increase in revenue and add to its open space. The only question in our minds is how soon can we get this done? Brian Cameron Deirdre Waitt-Mendoza Calabasas |
