Yes, it’s summer again in Acornland and that means high temps, low tops and plenty of productive hours wasted dreaming about vacation time that can’t come soon enough.

The beaches fill up, gas tanks run dry, and somewhere, somebody is remembering why it is they moved the family from Pittsburgh.

It’s a glorious time of year indeed, especially for the thousands of local students who will soon go from third-period history to “Eat.

Sleep. Watch TV. I’m history.” The final days of the academic calendar are upon us, and few can comprehend that thrill as well as I, a 2000 high school grad who couldn’t help but roll down my windows and blare Alice Cooper’s “School’s Out” every year in the parking lot after the inevitable final bell.

For me, it meant American Legion baseball, days at the lake and the return of my buddies from college. But that incomparable feeling of freedom can mean many things to many people. It is, after all, all relative.

School getting out might not be so cool say, for instance, if you were going to spend your summer as Barry Bonds’ public relations chief, or Rasheed Wallace’s etiquette instructor. Or if you’re a school bus driver or cafeteria lady who really needs a check.

This same altered view of the end of school occurs here at The Acorn, where the sports section lives and breathes with high school sports. The culmination of classes means the loss of 90 percent of my regular story subjects, and ushers in a three-month time period (prior to the start of football) where searching for material can mean simply walking down to my local park and seeing what I can find.

So in the interest of a better sports section, I’m asking you, the reader, to come forth with story ideas for the summer.

But not just any idea will do.

I’m sure there’s plenty of great athletes still out their succeeding in summer leagues and clubs, and I’ll keep an eye on them, but I’m looking for something a little more unique. More, “out-of-the-box,” as the business types would say.

I’m looking for the types of stories that scream, “summer fun.” Let’s think recreation. What do people do in this area to wile away the long summer days that includes at least minimal physical exertion and lots of good times?

For instance, let’s say there’s a local group that escapes every weekend to go bass fishing. Or a couple of friends who know all the best cliff-diving spots in a 100-mile radius. Is there anybody out there who loves dirt biking? Or ultimate frisbee? Or even yachting.

Maybe I’m crazy (and it’s been said before), but I have a feeling that these stories are out there—and I need your help to find them.

I’m looking to spotlight regular community members, young and old, who just love taking part in some type of recreation activity that the community at-large might not know is available, or have never thought of.

If you have any ideas please contact me via my email address at jorrey@theacorn.com. I need your help!

Idea or not, I wish everyone another unforgettable So Cal summer.

And for all the students out there chomping at the bit for the final bell, pump your fist and sing it with me, “Schooooooool’s OUT, for summer!”
