Principal does the right thing It is time to thank Oak Park High School principal Lynn McCormack for trying to stem the tide of student driving that endangers the lives of everybody on Oak Hills and Kanan at lunch time and after school. It hasn’t mattered whether one was on the road driving or on the sidewalk walking. We who live in the vicinity of OPHS know not to walk our dogs, babies, jog or drive during the hours that the students pour out of high school parking. Many students commence leaning on their horns before they even leave school premises, swear and make obscene hand gestures to others, including students who walk. They rarely stop for the stop sign as they enter Oak Hills and sometimes they park parallel to Oak Hills, exit cars to scream profane epithets, jostle, etc., while other students have to drive up the curb, across the sidewalk and down the curb to gain egress. Once on Oak Hills they are home free to speed, tailgate, change lanes without indicating or even looking, swerve, drive without any hands on the wheel and talk on the phone. Sadly, when they have a close encounter with a collision, they think it is hilarious. We are most appreciative of any steps that you are taking for our safety. And to those two out of 15 students that did stop at the stop sign last time we counted, thank you. Debra Herschman Oak Park |
