30 years ago: Town meeting gets emotional By Sophia Fischer sfischeracorn@yahoo.com

The multipurpose room at Lupin Hill Elementary was the scene of an emotional town meeting this week in 1975.

The Acorn reported on the gathering, which involved 200 Malibu Canyon Park homeowners protesting a proposed zoning change that would allow 988 single family homes to be built on a 92-acre site adjacent to their homes. The same parcel of land was originally zoned for 92 homes, according to the article.

The residents, members of the Malibu Canyon Homeowners Association, raised concerns about the impacts so many homes would have on the environment, on the hillsides surrounding existing homes, and on traffic.

The Regional Planning Commission hoped to make a decision the following day. Many homeowners planned to attend the meeting to voice their opposition to the proposed change, including Rod Sveiven, Lou Melson, Frank Fielding, Herb Speccer and James Wayne.

In other news, The Acorn offered good wishes to local Congressman Barry Goldwater Jr. and his wife, Susan, who welcomed a baby boy this week in 1975. The couple named their son Barry M. Goldwater III.

A young boy, by the name of Kevin Gullick, was named Grand Prizewinner of Agoura’s first-ever Kite Flying Contest this week 30 years ago.

Of the 75 kites launched in the air above the Agoura Valley Mall, Gullick’s was rated the most original and best in flight. Sponsored by local Girl Scouts and Brownie troops, the contest included a number of prizes donated by area merchants for winners in various categories.

The Sixth Annual Malibu Easter Sunday Breakfast was announced at the Malibu Lakeside Club. Unlimited buttermilk pancakes as well as eggs, ham and beverages were offered for $1.50 for adults and $1 for children.

Two new businesses opened in Whizin’s Arcade. Wall Country featured "fashions for walls" including wallpaper and unusual wall décor and was owned by Carol Jentes and Lori Enock. Pete and Genevieve Valentino moved their store, Beauty Supplies by Valentino, from Thousand Oaks to Agoura.

The Acorn will be taking a look back at our first year’s issues in the coming months, giving an historical perspective on "30 Years Ago in The Acorn." If you have memories to share from that time period, send your submission to Sophia Fischer at sfischeracorn@yahoo. com or fax to (818) 706-8942.
