Group on mission to spotlight arts Group on mission to spotlight arts Having an active venue for the arts in our city would increase community participation and improve the quality-of-life for citizens of all ages, as well as contribute to the cultural well-being of our community. For this reason, a group of citizens in Calabasas are on a mission to bring culture to our city and enliven it through the arts. We formed Spotlight the Arts several months ago, and our goal is to raise money to build a moderately-sized, fully-equipped theater for the visual and performing arts on the site of our future civic center. Spotlight intends to develop and promote a range of theater programs, which would include community and professional performances and educational outreach programs. The ancient Greeks recognized the importance of theater. In a performing arts theater breathes the soul of a community. The arts entertain, enlighten and transport us. When we experience a performance of drama or dance, we are put in touch with the very essence of our humanity. And likewise, as Leonard Bernstein so eloquently expressed it, ". . . music is especially marvelous. It names [indescribable] feelings for us, only in notes instead of words." The arts are at the heart of who we are. Building our playhouse will take a strong community effort. So, in the cooperative spirit of the days when an entire town would help raise a barn, let’s all work together to create a cultural legacy for Calabasas: our very own theater.
