Auditory integration practitioner offers hope for Conejo families Khymberleigh Herwill-Levin, an internationally-known auditory integration practitioner, offers new hope for children who are not getting good grades in school. She treats individuals experiencing Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD) which makes it difficult for the brain to modulate sound. A child with CAPD will not be able to process the teacher’s voice above other sound distractions. Individuals with CAPD have "perfectly functioning ears" but a "faulty relay station," according to Herwill-Levin. What they hear is therefore delayed and interfered with on the way to the brain where the sound is processed. "Hearing within normal limits doesn’t mean good processing," said Herwill-Levin. "Even a slight hearing loss will affect a child far more than an adult because the child is still learning about his environment and gaining skills through listening. A young child needs a hearing mechanism that will deliver clear sounds for processing." Auditory Integration Training involves flooding the client’s ears with electronically-distorted music, for two half-hour sessions per day, for 10 days, dramatically improving the problems ranging from allergies, irritable children, ADD/ADHD/CAPD/PDD and autism, according to Herwill-Levin. Research has found that in most cases the training improves listening skill and helps children with sound processing problems to do better at school.
