Drumming marathon to raise funds for Habitat
Event begins March 12
A 24-hour marathon of nonstop drumming will raise funds for Habitat for Humanity at 6 p.m. Sat., March 12 at the Bang a Drum world percussion store, 1255 S. La Brea Ave., Los Angeles. Proceeds will help rebuild houses destroyed by the Southern Asia tsunami and make an abandoned Los Angeles house livable for a family in need. Participants in the Drum-A-Thon will ask friends and family to pledge money for each hour they drum. Participation is free and open to the public. Hand drums are provided and no experience is necessary to participate. Pledge forms are available at the store or online at www.bangadrum.com. The event will be led by Kalani, an internationally recognized drum circle facilitator, performing artist and music educator. Habitat for Humanity has built more than 175,000 houses around the world, providing more than 750,000 people in 3,000 communities with safe, decent, affordable shelter. Through volunteer labor and donations of money and materials, Habitat builds and rehabilitates simple, decent houses with the help of the homeowner (partner) families. Habitat houses are sold to partner families at no profit and are financed with affordable, no-interest loans. The homeowners’ monthly mortgage payments are used to build still more Habitat houses.
