Harrison agenda

Financial spending, other issues top

Michael Harrison is a positive force on the Calabasas City Council.

He’s anything but a great politician. He certainly doesn’t always say what many want to hear, but what he does say, he means.

Unlike other council members who have come to our homeowner association meetings, whether monthly or by invitation, Harrison is the only one who listened, investigated, and brought forward specific agenda items to resolve our concerns.

Because of him, the adults and children walking to and from A.C. Stelle or Gelsons have a sidewalk between Freedom Drive and Daguerre on the north side of Mulholland Highway. We had been asking for completion of that $65,000 sidewalk for seven long years.

Mr. Harrison was the first to question how the council was spending taxpayer funds on the Ahmanson fight. Whether one was for or against it, the council has a fiduciary obligation to properly account for taxpayer funds, period.

The rest of the council members voted to put Mr. Harrison in charge of financial matters.

The Spolan Investigative Report was finally issued over the protests of a couple of long-time council members. It showed that indeed funds were not properly spent and/or accounted for, or decisions appropriately reported. That report resulted in several changes in accounting procedures, adherence to the open meeting laws, closer supervison of staff and stronger procedures in the letting of city contracts.

Because of his previous experience on the planning commission, the council voted to put Michael Harrison in charge of the Civic Center Task Force.

Recall that the council had fired the original architects a couple of years ago. Even with new ones, a firm leadership hand was needed to get that confused and unfocused task force back on track. Harrison’s determined leadership has resulted in a doable, affordable plan for accomplishing the design and building of the civic center.

Please join me in voting for Michael Harrison on March 8.
