Sierra Club endorsing
Lesley Devine
Sierra Club endorsing The Angeles Chapter of the Sierra Club endorses Lesley Devine for re-election to the Calabasas City Council. The Sierra Club, long considered the environmental heavy-weight, is endorsing only one candidate in this year’s Calabasas city election. Lesley never lost sight of the need to turn Ahmanson Ranch into public parkland and was a key strategist for that victory. She works hard to bring others into partnership with Calabasas to achieve our goals. For example, she was instrumental in saving over 800 acres of natural lands within Calabasas in large part by persuading other agencies to help buy the land. Some examples of parcels acquired are the old Micor land in the hills of Las Virgenes Valley and the Headwater’s Corner lands in Mulwood. The Sierra Club endorsement process is a multi-stage effort involving local participation and regional oversight. The club’s move to support Devine is based on her remarkable environmental record spanning many years in public office. No one has fought harder than she to protect the Santa Monica Mountains. Devine is chair of the Calabasas "Open Space Task Force" and the city’s representative to the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy and the Headwaters Corner Board of Directors. Additionally, she is endorsed by Save Open Space and environmental leaders L.A. County Supervisor Zev Yaraslavsky state Sen. Sheila Kuhel; Joe Edmiston (executive director of the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy); Gene Johnson (chair, Calabasas Environmental Commission); Glen Peterson (director, Las Virgenes Water District); Lisa Wilder (Calabasas Environmental commissioner and CPHA Board); Nancy Helsley (president, Resource District of the Santa Monica Mountains); Tom Gamache (nature photographer); Gene Johnson (Calabasas Environmental commissioner); and Steve Harris (executive director, Mountains Restoration Trust).
