City history celebrated

The Calabasas Anza Heritage Association will host its 20th annual "Anza en Calabazas" historical presentation and festivities from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Sun., Feb. 27 at the Sepulveda Adobe in Calabasas on Mulholland Highway west of Las Virgenes Road. Admission is free.

During the presentation, cast members will describe the 1776 journey commissioned by the viceroy of New Spain to carry the Charter for San Francisco.

The expedition was made by 240 colonists, more than half of whom were children. In total, they traveled 1,600 miles from Northern Mexico to San Francisco Bay, in what was then the largest expedition ever attempted on the North American Continent.

Pedro Alcantara Sepulveda built the Sepulveda Adobe in 1863, "four score and seven years" after his ancestors discovered this area as members of the Anza Expedition in 1776.

Participants in the historical presentation will include the event’s artistic director Ralph Lee Moss, a musician who has researched music of the era, and in particular, music of the Anza Expedition, and Julie Tumamait-Stenslie, a Chumash storyteller.
